Hello,

Wonder if anyone can shed some light on my problem. I just bought my 1st Landy(Defender 110 csw 1995) a few weeks ago and there seems to be a problem (sometimes) with the clutch slipping. I have never felt it slip when on a steep incline or pulling off etc, but it does seem to slip when on the motorway and accelerating through gears 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th. But it doesnt always do it. Been to Wales this past weekend and in the early part of the trip down it was doing it. The whole weekend I was trying to make it slip etc and it wouldnt. All they way back it didnt slip either?

Is this a common thing? I say it is slipping as when you put your foot down the engine revs much faster in relation to the acceleration in the vehicle and you actually have to tap off a bit to let it grip and accelerate slowly to build up speed.

I am just about to replace the clutch, but dont want to do it to find it doesnt solve the problem, so looking for some much needed advice.

Also is 24 mpg good or bad for a 1995 110 defender csw?

Many thanks
Rob

Most likely clutch plate worn out, or perhaps oil on it. Same solution, change it, but if it's the latter, find out where it is coming from, and fix that as well.
It is usual for a clutch to start slipping in high gears first.
Is there any kind of warranty, as I suspect you have found out the true reason for sale!

Before jumping to conclusions that the clutch is shot check the clutch pedal adjustment.

It is quite common for the nuts on the master slave cylinder to either be badly adjusted or have just come loose.

1st how much play have you got at the clutch pedal. If I remember it should be around 15-20 mm of free movement before it starts to move the clutch. If you have no slack the clutch isn't getting fully released thus the slipping.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the help.

There doesnt seem to be any movement on the pedal at all. I am taking it round to a friend tomorrow for him to have a look. Another friend looked last night and he suggested oil as well as he says the clutch doesnt appear to be worn.

There are now warrenties unfortunatly. I think the best thing is to drop the box and have a look at the oil seals and while it is out replace the clutch. Which make/brand of clutch would be better to fit. I dont want all the work then fitting a cheap crappy one?

Many thanks
Rob
