Ok I took me landy out last week for a little drive and all went well for a
couple of miles and then it started to sound like a steam engine.
It makes a chuffing noise when I put me foot down so I took off the air filter (K+N) and it is pushing air/petrol mix back through the air intake.
It runs but it's got no go in it and there is no bangs or rattels.

So what do you all think ? valve stuck open?
Is this sort of thing common and any advice on removing the cylinder head.

Ps
Its a 2a SWB 2.25 petrol (3 bearings type)

Ta
I think you could be right as i have lost compression in pots 1 and 2.
O well it will give me somthing to do over x-mass

Ps
Anything else i should be looking out for ?
and is it best to get the head reconed or is it best to DIY it?

Well got the head off today and there is a bit of the head gasket about 15mm wide missing between pots 1 and 2

My questions this time are :-
1. What do you do if you snap off the studs that hold the exhaust pipe on to the manifold?
drill + tap or replace manifold?

2. How much gap is acceptable when testing for head flatness.

3. The head gasket I took off was copper (look's new) and the replacement I have from pad's is standard gasket material, so which is best ?
Is the new one likly to be better with a none flat head?

Also the Muppet who last had the head off didn't put back all the bits ie. missing rocker seat collets and missing inlet manifold studs / bolts and no thermosta.
Could something he failed to do cause the head gasket failure?
