I have a problem with the cd player in my 1998 TD5 Discovery. The cd player only plays cd's quitly but the radio and the tape play as load as you like. I have checked all the settings on the head unit and these will not make the cd play any louder. I believe the installation to be standard this being a six change multi changer under the drivers seat and some sort of amp looking box under the passenger seat. Has anyone got any ideas? I would appreciate some advise on this. Thanks.

I had a similar problem with another CD changer and the problem was a burned fuse. It still checked out with an Ohmmeter, but was limiting voltage across the fuse to about 5.5 VDC. This caused muted play and eventually overheated the changer's built-in amplifier.

Yes the fuse was in the changer, but doesn't have to be. Any weak electrical link could give a similar symptom. Another side effect was heat. The fuse area was noticeably warmer than the rest of the changer.
Do you connect directly to the stereo receiver with the CD changer or do you go through a modulator? If you connect directly there may be a problem with your receiver recognizing the signal from the changer. A modulator may remedy that problem.
