hi all, I recently put a post on here regarding the problem of not getting landy in any gear. Its been stood for a while but drove last time it was used. I got some helpfull response last week about trying to tow in gear and let it tick over for a while. Today was the problem, none of this worked, I tried starting it in reverse gear hoping to free the fly wheel, all i got was a cab full of smoke from gearbox. Just to say clutch pedal seems to be perfect with plenty there., STARTING TO GET TO ME PLEASE HELP

just to say the smoke was the earth strap from gearbox to chassis

If the clutch is seized, you might be able to get it into gear by getting someone to turn the engine over with the handle whilst trying to select gear. If the clutch is working properly then you can try opening the top plate and seeing if the selectors move freely. I presume the vehicle will roll if it's in neutral and the hand brake is off?

Hi, I'll try this with the starting handle tomorow, will this correct the clutch and yes it does roll in neutral. Thanks

If you are getting smoke from an earth strap it is either a bad earth or a dead short!

Do the brakes work? If they do, try to bump start it, then holding the clutch pedal down stamp on the brakes.

That's usually enough to free the clutch plates.

only last week we had a vw buggy with the same issue, been sat 2 years, unfortunately towing in any gear, brakes etc , even WD40 sprayed inside (not ideal but last resort) nothing worked, engine out and the mearest pry with a screwdriver and it seperated... never had one stuck like it....

landy should be heavy enough for the tow / brake trick to work though... may need another landy in low to shift it though...

Cheers steve

There should be an inspection plate on the back of the bell housing - might let you see what the clutch is doing.

Hi all, tried all the above today and still same problem, goes into gear when engine off and won't when engine running, going to strip out front end and separate gearbox from engine in the week to see what the clutch is doing, I'll let you no what I've found, this is bugging me like you won't believe. Thanks for all your interest

As I said, put it in gear and bump start with it in gear.
You need it in gear before you start, otherwise trying to engage when the engine is running is just about impossible!

You are facing a serious issue related to clutch and gearbox and this one you cannot repair for that purpose you have to tow your vehicle to the garage. They will open the gear box and clutch then only you will know what the problem here.

Hi, tried this yesterday as mentioned, didn't bump in gear at all just on the key itself.

Towed back home on the drive after a miserable fail, will be dropping gearbox this week to have a look, nothing a good socket set won't fix I'm sure.

One thing I have not seen anyone mentiion is the pins in the clutch linkage. I've had these shear and the symptoms are as you describe - filthy bugger won't go into gear when running because the clutch is not declutching completely.

Before you have the gearbox out completely do have a look at the pins/sleeve that conect the slave cylinder linkage to the throwout linkage in the transmission. Might be you got lucky and have just sheared one - it's not unknown.

Hey, took the passenger floor tray up earlier, before going further I undone the slave cylinder to have a look, the piston was so caked up with muck and what looked like rust that it hardly moved, I did clean it with sand paper but think I might buy new, also the rod that is positioned still in the back of the box looks caked up too. What are the chances that this is my problem.
