Can I replace a knackered v8 auto with a different engine?

I thought I posted this earlier, but it looks like I am wrong (again, and again...), anyway...

I've just taken my Disco 2 (v8 auto petrol) to the garage, and they say the engine's stuffed (they put a camera down the pug holes and saw metal shavings, and a dent "where the piston hit"). Something about the "sleeves have dropped"(?).

Can I replace my engine with something different? Like a TD5 / TDi, and still keep the auto?

you can do any thing but it would be cheaper to fit fresh v8 and sell it if you want a td5/tdi but it can be done if you want a diesel at the least you will need an engine, ECU, and engine wiring loom, radiator, engine mountings???? different auto gear box???

As Martin has said, you'd need the TD5 and gearbox, PLUS the gearbox ECU PLUS the Engine ECU, there are a lot of other bits that need changing as well, like engine/gearbox mounts, but it is do-able.

The biggest issue will be finding an engine/gearbox with both ECU's and then getting them integrated into the new vehicle.

I'd definitely go for buying the two together as a lump, that saves you possible compatibility problems.

We have fitted a V8 short engine to our Disco 2, and doing the work ourselves we probably spent £1600+ which included the short engine from Matford Land Rover (ebay) new clutch, water pump, hoses, thermostat, gaskets etc etc.

If you have possible head damage then the costs will be affected, but a lot depends on what equipment you have and if you have space to do it.

I'd go for the rebuild myself, having done one already, but there are a couple of issues with the cross-bolted block short engines on sale, they have the earlier flywheel pickup mounting plate which is different to the Thor version.

Possibly a flywheel change might have got us out of the poo on that, but we moved the sensor instead.
