Ladies and Gentlemen of the forum,

I am very new to all this but I can say I'm a Landrover owner as I do own a Freelander 02.

I am looking at buying a Discovery 2.5 Diesel auto 1995 with 125000 miles on the clock. It has just passed it's MOT and therefore I'm hopeing it's going to be ok.

The advice I need is as follows:-

1, Things to easily spot that might mean it's not ok?
2, MPG in an auot vs MPG in a manual?
3, How long, with good care, should a Disco engine last in miles?

I welcome all comments good and bad as I want the truth (yes I can handle the truth) because I live in Ireland and I'm going to buy the Disco in the UK so there is very little time to decide if I buy or not.

Thanks in advance,

Toshlad

Av a good look around the disco section for info theres ****loads.

Engine n box is a good thing to check cos they cost loads to replace...Inner wings/body mounts/boot floor n inner wheel arches for rust amongst other places.

Look after the engine and it'll outlast your ownership.
:welcome2:

As said they rust (well the bits made of steel anyway :D) Check inside the rear doors on the rear arch, boot floor and inner front wings. Engine is looked after will easily do double that mileage and carry on long after the body has fallen to bits :D

I am assuming thats a 300tdi? Belt change is 70k but people recommend 60k so its either just had the 2nd one done or is due soonish, worth checking if it has any note of when it was last done. :)

Thanks guys, I will take a look at all your advice.

As a newbie (and slag me if you want to) but what's the difference between and 200TDi and a 300TDi Disco?

off the top of my head:

- 300 got a bit of a facelift, most notably the interior got updated, and possibly the grille/headlights got changed slightly?
- i think the 300 got a new manual gearbox, but the autos kept the same old borg warner 4 speed that it had before, im not sure whether the transfer case/props/axles etc got changed or not.
- 300tdi is a bit smoother and less tractor like.
- 300tdi is drive by wire, whereas the older 200tdi has the old fashioned throttle cable setup.
- 300tdi's had different wheels to the 200's
- 300tdi's had lights in the rear bumper.
