Been having trouble with my drivers side front indicator for a while. It stopped working (with resultant quick flash of rear bulb) - so changed the bulb and it was sorted - but then failed again quite quickly. This time when I took the bulb holder out I noticed some scorching on 1 of the power connector rubbing jobbies. So I swapped the holder with the passenger side - passenger side still worked, driver side still wouldn't. So bulb and holder OK - the problem's with the lens unit. Wiggled the bulb holder around and got it working again. But of course it was shot lived and now will not work at all. Time to investigate further.....

So bulb holder is OK, bulb OK, wiring to the light lens OK (cos wiggling the holder got it going temporarily. So the actual light lens is probably shot. As its tucked up under the wheel arch, I used my camera to get a look at it (got that tip form someone looking for a coolant leak this week:) ). This is what I found.....

This is the 'bad' connector that had the scorching. Its the one towards the center of the car (left as you look at it from under the wheel arch). I believe the connector is the square area more to the right. It looks to have a round metal piece and appears to be rather untidy. You can see scorching and I'm sure it should have a plate on there for the bulb holder connector to push against ...

This is the 'good' connector that I believe is still working OK. It looks tidy and has a plate for the bulb holder connector to push against....

Any advice? Should I just get a new lens unit - they're going to be expensive over here, I wouldn't be suprised if I'm quoted 100 quid from a breakers. Could I repair/bodge the connector somehow?

Sorry for quality of photos, was getting dark and 2 of those pics were taken by shining a torch at the lens! The angles are all scewed up as well from holding the camera at an angle that would fit in there.

Sorted.

Once the lens unit was off the car and a good look could be had, the faulty piece pointed out above was the culprit.

The good side had a nice shiny metal plate (seen in the pics) that is the contact for the bulb holder. On the faulty side, that round hole was actually a hole burnt in the metal plate.

My fix was to fill the hole with solder to build it up to make contact with the bulb holder's contact. Having done that - reconnected and hey presto, a flashing indicator!

Not sure how long the solder will last. Hopefully till Tuesday when I can get it through the WOF/MOT. If it fails again, I'll sort out a replacement lens unit.
