Guys,

I need to tap into your wealth of experience here. I want to mount my Hi Lift to the bumper of my 90.

I have checked with my insurer (Adrian Flux) and there is no penalties/restrictions on this.

However does anyone have any personal experience of mounting a hi lift on the front bumper?

Obviously i am aware of the issues with Dirt etc getting in the mechanism so will be investing in a frontrunner cover for it

Many Thanks

A tricky one.
Logic suggests that if a winch on a winch bumper is legal a hi lift jack should also be legal, but logic and the law are not always good bedfellows.
I can see there might be criminal issues around construction and use ( inherently less safe in an accident than mounting it further away from harm) and civil issues ( pedestrian injured by jack when would otherwise have been less injured/uninjured by a standard bumper), therefore increases chances of liability and/or increases damages).
I`d also go back to your brokers and make sure they are answering the right question - and you want the answer in writing. They might have told you it isn`t a mod which affects your premium, and thats only part of the story.
As a reality check I don`t think I`ve ever seen a hi lift mounted to a front bumper on anything which is road legal - have you checked with any of the farmjack/ mounting bracket manufacturers to see if they have any experience ?

PS if you are going to do any serious wading I think your frontrunner cover will potentially be next to useless - there`s a reason people mount them inside or high on the back

ok yeah fair point about the wading!!

what about on the bonnet, just beneath the windscreen?

How would you open the vent panels and/or the bonnet ?
The other thing to consider is security - the more visible it is the more likely to get pinched, even with a locking bracket

I keep mine in my shed, doesn't get rusty or in the way there! Had it for nearly 25-years and never needed it in anger yet, it just increased the weight I was carrying around. I have used it plenty of times in the garden (removing tree stumps, lifting fence-posts etc) but not off road with the LR.
I am sure that in the correct situation they have their uses but in all my years of off-roading I never came across a situation where I needed to use it, I could have contrived some but there was always a better way out.

keep it inside, they dont like getting wet and muddy as you will find out when you need to use it ! mine is upright just inside the back door hindge side does not get in the way provides a hand rail to get in back and is right there when needed. But I normally use the disco bottle jack as much safer and easier to use, used the Hilift once to change wheel when offroad and could not get under with the bottle jack.
