Aye up

When I were a lad used to go down local pit on a old Honda 90 without
exhaust made bubbly popping sound hence calling them bubble machines..

When taking foot of pedal or going down hills with no throttle get the same
old popping sound from exhaust of my series 3..

Exhaust seems ok no obvious leaks or loose bits and rides ok apart from this
does anyone know what could be causing this?

Thanks

backfiring ??

Light backfire - unburnt fuel being exhausted (excuse pun). Although
it's illegal, you should always freewheel downhill in a LR unless you
need engine-braking or are as rich as Croesus...

It doesn't take much of a leak to give a popping on overrun.
Alternativly, it can be caused by worn exhaust valves.

Normally it's a very small exhaust leak at the manifold flange allowing
air into the exhaust. It probably won't be audible as a leak, but
removing and resealing the flange joint will probably sort it out.

Thanks

Working on it, putting on some new gaskets on the exhaust and manifold.

Why should you always freewheel downhill in a landrover?
Something i dont know about.

By the way what is brake fade in a series 3 like around wales, scotland etc.
Do the drums suffer from bad fade? My Buss did, was almost unstoppable by
the time i got to the bottom of some welsh hills, wondering what to expect
from my s3 88 with a caravan on..

Drive down a hill in a low gear where engine braking does some good,
especially when you have a caravan/trailer on the back.

That way when you need to use your brakes, ie emergency stop at the bottom
of the hill, you have them.

HGVs have things like exhaust brakes which work on reducing the output of
the engine and therefore slowing the vehicle down via the drive axle, but I
don't think that's an easy fitment to get onto a series LR :)

Yeah, it struck me as unusual that the poster said to go downhill out of
gear..?

I'd check my brakes were properly adjusted...

Including on the caravan.

But Land Rovers have these things called gears.
