Hi guys

I have just been looking on the paddocks website and looking at winch bumpers as I plan to use my 90 for off roading and plan to fit a 17,000lb electric winch to it, so just like to know if the britpart winch bumpers are any good.

I know there are other winch bumpers out there but just thought I would ask :)

Yeah I have googled a few different ones and decided I want one that either has the fairlead built in or allows the fairlead to not stick out to much to make parking a little easier and help stops the fairlead from being damaged.

the winch I would like to fit is an winchmaster 17,000lb winch but think I need to look at a few different winch bumpers with different winches fitted as I know winches very in how a winch bolts in place on a bumper :)

Check the specs. A cheap 17000lb winch usually makes the power by simply gearing down .. and is thus glacier slow.

Can't check as I sold my 12,000lb'er with my s11a 4 years ago and I haven't got a landy yet to buy the 17,000'er for but I had a mate who bought a 15,000'er same make and that worked fine so I don't see why the 17,000'er shouldn't.

sorry just realized its not a winchmaster winch its a winchmax :)

Read the specs .. geared differently so quite a bit slower under load .. Check 130620851596

17000 358:1 - high gearing
13000 265:1 - lower gearing

Both same no load line speed and motor power so I suspect exactly the same motor etc

No stronger really, just pulls the line more slowly so it might cope with more weight! OK, the casings etc are beefed up, but that's also 'cos the 17000 is aimed at dead-weight vehicle recovery off a beavertail or tow truck (read the listings).

Believe me, a slow winch speed is a real ball-ache (I have a M8000 warn) ... which was running at half power in the following video (brushed only half on the commutator, as I found out later) .. it seemed to take ages!

Right I see what you mean now so a 12,000lb one would be better then ;)

certainly a bit quicker and 17000lbs is overkill anyway, dragging that steel cable up a hill would be a killer.

I run a 9000lbs superwinch and its always pulled my fat Disco out of evey muddy hole its ever been in, if you need more power then invest in a snatch block to effectively double the strength of the pull for the odd occasion you helping a friend out in a super heavy slitty or 110

Big winch numbers are one thing but how much pull can a defender chassis take before you rip the winch out of the chassis?

And they are £100 cheeper aswell ;)

Something I will have to look at when I get a defender when I had a winch on my s11a it had a new galv chassis and the front x member had tubes welded in with securing bolts fitted into them aswell as bolted to the bumper and we made our own mounting plate out of 8MM steel plate to fix the winch to wish we could do it to a defender but defo look at it though :)
