breathing problem

hi can anyone help i have a 1998 2.5 dse good nick 117.000 miles
blowing oil out the breather on offside of engine my mechanic says the rings will have gone,
my local engine rebuild centre says does it use oil answer no just completed 1000 miles round cornwall, no rattles , it is hard to start when hot but iam told thats normal, a new battery has helped with that , just wondered before going for the expensive bits if anyone had any ideas, i bought this vehicle a month ago it has had a rep head about a year ago but for what i dont know regards H, (ps returned 21 mpg yuk):(

I take it you mean the cam cover breather that goes into the turbo inlet pipe. There is a metal gauze oil seperator in cam cover, maybe it is blocked with gunge. Some oil mist from this breather into turbo pipe is normal.
 
Its a defender with 1986 onwards 2.5 td. I will be putting breather in chassis and the forced air intake on the wing and a forward facing top to the snorkle.
