Hi Ladys and Gents i'm new to this forum, picked up a 1985 Range Rover which needs a bit of work non the brakes.

As far as i can see the near side caliper seal has gone which is pouring brake fluid everywhere!!!

Where is my best source for a recon caliper? or is it worth buying a seal kit and doing it myself? how difficult is it? and have you any tips?

Thanks in advance

Chris

Ifit'sleaking it's worth popping thepistons first to check condition of bores/pistons If they're ok,you should be able to do a seal kit ok. Bit fiddly but relatively simple. Paddock/Craddock seem about same price as most & fairly reasonable.

Taking out the Pistons isn't hard you have to make sure you dont score the bores of the Caliper.

It might also be worth checking to see if the union between the Caliper and Flexi hose (or rigid hose)

I'd first check all the unions for leakage/damage. Then see if it is the piston or Caliper housing causing the leak.

To remove the Seals from the pistons gently lift the seals off with a blunt screwdriver or similar( Do not scratch the bores). Ease the Piston out with use of either a tyre pump or High pressure line (Be very carefull with high pressure lines) You have to loosen the bleed nipple to do this (It's also easier than pulling the piston out by hand due to rust or junk). Examine the bore/piston for damage if it's damaged replace it

Replacement is reversal but soak components in brake fluid to ease installation. Seals can just be gently replaced by easing on.

(This is how I had to replace one of my caliper pistons on an 89 Range Rover, although my caliper had to be replaced due to being cracked.)

As the previous person has said Paddocks/Craddock is about the cheapest.

Don't know if this is any use to you.
