hi there can anyone advise? in the process of doing up a series 11a lightweight but the front wings have perished against the bulkhead, was thinkin about cutting back the rot and replacing with aluminium. dont kno if you can weld old birmabright to new ali + never welded ali with a mig so I dont know how hard it is? anyone got any advice or is it just a bridge to far??

if you don't have previous ally welding experience i would say it's a bridge too far mate..

never welded birmabright but will tell you that ally welding is one of the hardest to get right and with a mig welder(even with argon and ally wire) it's not for the faint hearted..

i personally tig any ally work i do as its far more controlable(less warping and better heat dissapation)..

the best advice i can give is if you really want to have a go is get the correct wire, gas and tip's for your mig then get some ally off cuts and a bit of old bulk head(get the diameter you will be working with) and practise first.

welded loads of landy panels back in the seventies, cannot use silicon rods to gas weld bermabrite, you have to cut strips of berma off an old panel and use that as the "filler"
