Tdi's aren't powerful, no. You're looking at around 111 bhp. They're pretty torquey though, but you're not going to win any races with one. They are generally very tough and long lasting, pretty economical and of course very easy to work on... probably one of the best engines LR has made to date.

so how much would a decent 300tdi defender cost me

They range from £3000 to £6000 they are plenty powerful enough m8 I have a v8 defender and I can still say that, and since when did any1 buy a defender for winning a race dick head. The bloke is asking for a simple to work on and good off road vehicle I don't remember him saying that he was entering a rally competition.

Yes m8 you will be fine with a 300tdi if you get bord of the power you can put sports exhaust on it and de- egr it will go better and if your still bord you can turn the turbo up with a spanner trust me they are alright.

As long as u fit a snorkle you will be fine in deep water aswell as you have no coil or dissy to worry about
