Just took the head off my td5 as the compression was low on No3 and it was running lumpy. Here is a picture of what i found. The valve has hit the piston and i think has bent the conrod as this is as high it will go, the others come up flush.
Is it possible to change it from underneath?

Valve wont have bent conrod that takes some serious effort, have you been using coolant?

A little coolant is being used, but this occured when i came off a motorway after an hour run. How is the marks of the valve explained?

Sticking valve maybe would cause mark on piston. But the valve bending the con rod is highly unlikely. It would trash the valve long before it bent the con rod. Starting with coolant in the cylinder could easily bend the con rod. As you already have the head off changing the con rod should be fairly straight forwards.

The con rod is pretty dammed strong, would win any contest with a valve stem. But the piston should stand proud of the block at TDC so something has happened. To be sure it won't repeat the story you should spend some time trying to find out exactly what happened and why.

Spanner on end of crank & turn crank side to side ! with hand /finger on top of piston ! make sure piston moves as SOON as you turn crank ! IF NOT BIG-END gone which will cause valve to hit piston !:eek::oops:
