G'day Folks,

I was wondering if the Bearmach branded side steps for series Land Rovers are as good as the originals.

Has anyone here got first hand experience of these things?

Rumour has it that the cheaper ones just bend when you stand on them. Does this include Bearmach ones or not?

They must be. I want a couple of side steps too so was waiting for replies with interest. How much are the Bearmach ones you have seen?
I've asked the same question on the series 2 club forum and there the results are not so positive at the moment.

I've been told by Craddocks that the Bearmach ones they sell are stronger than the Britpart versions. I'm not sure, however, if that means they are as good as the original. (Sure I could ask Craddocks that but people on the end of the phone are more often than not kinda different from people with real experience)

I've actually seen two for sale in Holland that kinda fall in the right price bracket for me but it is still a lot of money for tat.

The cost in the UK seems to be about 70 quid a step if you hunt about.

Craddocks also have "original" steps for sale on ebay but when you ring them up and ask about them they say they are actually "Bearmach original" ones...

...all a bit tedious.

I've recently bought an "original" one in a box with Land Rover instructions and all that jizz but even these new originals have only one strengthening bracket under the step and not the two that are on my one surviving knackered rusted original.

I'm reaching the conclusion second hand junk and a bit of welding and metal bashing is probably going to be better than buying anything new.

I've heard that the Bearmach ones do flex still but I've also read that the old original ones did too to quite some extent!

So far I've come across two "original" types

The very original ones on my 1965 series 2 station look like this

But a new original one I've got only has one strengthening piece under the step

How about fabricating another web and welding it on? Just a thought.
Oh yes - that will most certainly happen if I use this one but it is a shame to put in that extra work for something that isn't the cheapest thing in the world in the first place...

...I'm on the hunt for knackered second hand ones that will only need a good bashing with an angle grinder and wire brush attachment
