The charge warning light came on and yesterday when the ignition was off. Started, light went off and drove okay until got home but now when attempting to turn the key the alarm goes off (which never happens normally as it is usually left in "valet" mode), the engine does not start. Attempted to charge the battery in situ, charger says battery requires a charge but it doesn't seem to be taking it.

Will try swapping battery later (need to get hold of one first), I suspect alternator problems but am looking for any advice.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

dunno what alt yer got fitted, but if its an lucas acr or similar the centre brush can wear a hole through the slip ring. all is fine until just before it breaks through and you get very low charge which puts yer warning light on, briefly!. after that its worn right through and as yer warning bulb no longer has an earth it will not light even though you are not charging. if it not the same set up as the ACR then it might be yer retifier or regulator.

I don't know much about Landys (yet!), but had a similar problem on a Vauxhall some time ago.
The rectifier in the alternator had packed up. This resulted in the alternator drining the battery. The rear of the alternator was warm when the engine was cold - is yours?
You could disconnect the alternator (tape up any bare ends), then see if the battery will charge.
Hope this helps.

Paul.

The alternator was getting warm, disconnected it and the warning light goes out. Looks like it is the root of the problem, thanks for replies.
