battery cut off switch - stupid question???

Where does it go? In line with the positive right?

normally yes, but i cant see any reason why electrically it couldnt be in the neg earth lead.... depends on the physical connections on the thing... some of them are made to fit on the pos battery terminal and some have a fused bypass to connect radios , immobilisers etc.

You might only wish to isolate e.g. the starter motor in which case put the switch in the heavy duty red wire from the Positive terminal. Everything else will still work, I think, except the starter. Check the wiring diagram in the manual.

If you break the earth wire, nothing will work at all.
