Hi All

I haven't seen this problem in any of the land rover forums before but perhaps someone has come across it before and can shed light on it.

When my Discovery* [TD5 MM (2000) ] gets up to working temperature when you select Neutral it doesnt show the "N" on the Dash (its blank) or the red LED on the Gear selector. If i put a bit of pressure on the select lever ( pulling it towards the rear of the vehicle ) it does however show the LED and "N". its like the level is sort of out of alignment or something.

It does however go into Neutral fine .

My layman diagnosis is that its the selector itself is faulty , electronically or perhaps the lever is slight worn. The only concern being that it seems to be OK until it gets warm.

Is that likely .. or is it something more critical perhaps.

As it doesn't seem to be causing any "problems" at the moment I don't feel light getting it into local dealer as these sort of undeveloped things tend to lead to a load of head scratching.

My concern is that if this was to develop into the "D" and "R" areas I could be looking at a breakdown somewhere. But the fact that the Gearbox goes into Neutral when its not on the panel makes me things that there is not a direct link between the Gearbox ECU (and the Gear selected) and these indicators . Anyone know if that is the case ?

Otherwise there is no indication of a Gearbox problem ( no warnings or the dreaded M&S warning -- ive had that .. and a new gearbox as a result a year or so ago.

Cheers for any shared experiences on that.

sounds like the position switch (or XYZ switch) is out of adjustment or faulty.

This lives on the left hand side of the gearbox on the selector shaft and is secured by 2 10mm bolts. There is a special tool to set it up but you can adjust without the tool as follows............

Do this with the engine cold as the switch lives above the exhaust and you could get burnt.

1. get someone to sit in the car with the ignition on and selector in neutral.
2. slacken the two 10mm bolts that hold the switch to the gearbox.
3. twist the switch one way or other untill the led on the gear selector panel lights up on neutral and N is on the dash display. (get your mate to shout "STOP")
4. tighten the 10mm bolts
5 run through the gears slowly and make sure all led's light up in the right gear position and the dash displays the right gear position.

If this doesn't fix it, the XYZ switch is faulty.
