I have been looking recently at getting into land rovers and I cannot help but think that it is a bit of mine field.

I am trying to decide what to buy as my first vehicle and I am swaying towards a tax exempt series. I have also looked at some defenders but think by budget of £500-£1000 will mean that I will stick with the series.

I am just looking for advice as to what to go for and whether I am being realistic on price. I dont mind doing some mechanics myself but would be looking for something where the chassis and bulkhead are in good order and that will drive away.

Any views mosts welcomed.:)

save up a bit more. i payed about 2500 for my first defender and spent nearly the same again sorting out all the problems it had.

I thought defenders were more hassle than earlier land rovers such as series 3s.

If i am honest i would probably go for a defender but most of theones I have seen priced 2-5K are fairly tired examples.

Better drive a few to see what you fancy, the fuel issues are hurting folks at the minute and they are unloading disco's cheap, and still a well capable vehicle with comfort.

Dunt buy a freelander tho ffs.

And they all need worked on, depending on how fussy you are, what you use it for and so on but they are easy to repair and cheap.

Take somebody who knows what to look for, anything other than a disco etc probably has been used by some contractor or a farmer.
