Are remoulds really that bad?

I've only had my Disco for a matter of weeks but I am already looking at changing the wide road tires the previous owner fitted and putting a semi decent set of off road/on road shoes on him ('Dave').

The only way I would be able to afford 5 shoes for him is by buying remoulds, which I have no problem with.

My missus does however!

She is always saying that remoulds are very dangerous to fit as they are much weaker than new tires and much more likely to go 'bang', particularly at speed of when bouncing off rocks when off road.

Is this really true?

I can't imagine that tires that are this dangerous are allowed to be sold but can anybody offer any tales good or bad about remoulds from personal experience to either prove me right or wrong?

Cheers, Kev

I may stand corrected on this but remoulds are stamped with a speed rating which is much lower than normal tyres and so if this is exceeded than there is a potential they could go bang.

But remember that in a Landy you are less likely to exceed that speed rating and should in theory anyway not cause problems

remoulds are generally ok they have come along way since the days of just glueing more tread onto the carcass.. they have to be for atleast two reasons

1/ gov regulations wint allow dodgy stuff to be sold

2/ the company wouldn't want to be hammered by law suits every week

3/ if they were dangerous and legal ..folk wint buy them so there would be no market for them to be sold so they wint get made.

and speed rating shouldn't be taken as the max speed they will endure as its all depends on the load on them aswell as speed..

Yeah, they've got a poor reputation from way back & it sticks.

Have a look at Insa Turbos. They've got an increasingly good rep' & they got several patterns to cover most needs.
