In the shed. Making engines for ME
I have available to me free of charge a Webasto thermo top V Diesel burning heater.
I have looked and the fitting looks straightforward but I am not sure of the gains for the effort in fitting. The intension is to fit to the cooling system so that the heater demister is working quickly.
Has anyone fitted one to a TD5 and was it worth it?

I fitted one to a 200tdi, a 300tdi a td5 disco and a v8 mercedes
When they are working they are the mutts nuts, set it for 30 mins before leaving, warm engine and best of all warm heat almost straight away.
When they pack up real pain in the arse!
Its all easy only slightly difficult bit is the fuel feed pipe, on the disco there was a spare nipple on the tank sender unit I drilled and ran the pick up pipe through, some people break into the main diesel feed pipe, but I didnt want any failure points.

Thank you for the information I take it then that they may not be reliable pieces of kit, as you say "when they are working they are the mutts nuts". You have fitted them to 4 vehicles so the effort must be worth it.

I have the Webasto workshop manual for the Thermo top V, looking past all the warnings about working on the units without proper training they appear to be straightforward in their construction and installation. (I am not recommending anyone without any knowledge should just stuff one under the bonnet of a Defender seek advice first).

To help with my decision to supply fuel from the vehicle tank or fit a separate tank just how much diesel do they burn say in 30 minutes?

Iirc they burn 1/2 a litre per hour at full, chat, once up to temp they go into idle, 30 mins running is all you really need, so 1/4 litre of fuel, basically 25 pence.
Getting into a warm car is excellent, I have just bought the upgrade remote control widget for my D3.

If you do some research theres **** loads of posts/threads where people have had problems with them, some are Im sure through neglect, also lots of the boat people reckon red derv does them no good and white diesel is the way to go.
Widely used on boats, barges, narrow boats etc.
They are very simple to work on, so simple you will wonder what all the fuss is about.
All the trucks we used to see had them fitted, they were the hot air version, this time of year would see a few die, sometimes cheap fix glow plug and gauze, others more expensive with fan motor dead or ecu failed(rare).

The webasto unit was an option on the D2 and Freelander, standard fit on R/rover, D3, D4, unsure on current models as not seen under the bonnet of one.
Rover 75, lots of the vw/ford people carriers also had them.

Some take a signal to start up from a std 12 volt supply, other canbus and newer ones vcan?

That's great information. I will go ahead and fit the one I have. Thank you again
