Over the years this forum has provided me with invaluable info which has saved me tons of money in repair bills and has made me a way more competent mechanic on my Landy.

So I have pledged to make it my aim to contribute what ever I can, no matter how simple it might be in the hopes of assisting someone somewhere who might be faced with a similar situation.

That being said... couple weeks ago I was faced with a persistent metallic rattle from beneath the landy which was constantly present as long as the wheels were spinning and would disappear as soon as I applied the brakes. It was very noticable over rough roads, actually down right annoying.
Granted, my rear brake pads are worn and have some play but I decided to replace the anti-rattle pins.
This has reduced the noise from 100% to 20% immediately.

Vehicle: 2004, Defender 110, td5 axles, rear discs at rear
Part#: STC8575

The pins were Britpart branded and seemed far superior to the Allmakes ones I had on previously. You can see from the attached photo the difference in terms of size, length of spring and style of retaining pin.

Happy to see a positive result from such an inexpensive fix ;).

If you search the earlier brakes used a bent tin shim widget that sat on the pads and the pins held it snug onto the pads and they are much betetr at stopping the rattling noise.
I had a 300 disco and the pad rattle used to drive me mad, the tin shims cured it, I cant remember if I had to tweak them or not to get them to fit?

There’s a kit from a Volvo that cures the rear pad rattle.
It has two metal springs that tension the pads from above. I tried everything to stop my brand new LR OE rear pads from rattling and then found this kit from a LR parts seller.

I have heard that these "bent shims" work better indeed. Actually I was very close to purchasing them but held off because I was told they are for Discos and 90s only. They wouldn't fit the 110.

To stop the rear pads rattling on the 110 TD5 fit this kit

From Huddersfield Land Rover Centre
Part no. STC8575-AR

It’s £8 including postage. Not sure what other calipers it will fit, but the fronts rarely rattle anyway.
