Another Freo - not bloody likely

Greetings all, (or should that be G'day?)

I'm on my second Td5, this one's an auto and just clocked-over 200000Km. This one has had a heap of mechanical failures. All the usual suspects (injector loom, transfer case spacers, intercooler hose blowout (de-lamination), both suspension air bags, radiator, alternator, sump leak, transfer case leak, XYZ switch, steering lock and a heap of electricals).

I recently did a stage 1 ECU upgrade - made a huge difference. Brakes lousy, but no-one seems to know what to do about this. I have a 135 litre long range fuel tank and snorkel, an electrolysis negative ion cct, 18" rubber, full brush bar and spotties - and all else is off the shelf.

I live in a country area 80 Km out of Melbourne and get off the road a bit. Great truck on a long trip, sits on the road at 110 Kmh like a rock (Freeway allowed in Oz) and sucks 11 litres/100Km with A/C on.

The Mrs has a Td4 Freo, and it's a crock. Don't buy one of these. I think LR just about re-built it during Warranty period. IRD failed, Gearbox (auto steptronic) failed, the whole rear suspension was replaced as part of a recall, issues with brakes, 3 replaced blinker and key assemblies, fires under dashboard, the list goes on. We couldn't sell it! In fact, near couldn't give it away. Currently the gear change between 2nd and 3rd nearly knocks the car sideways. Now given the question begging - No, the Mrs is a sedate driver, her last 2 cars were faultless (a Mazda 626 did 300000 Km without a thing go wrong, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee did 50000 with no issues except its handling she rated as unsafe and traded it for the Freo when we had kid number 2). When the economy picks-up she wants a VW Tourag diesel - 5 star safety and all that.

I've never needed a diff lock off road, even on really slippery tricky stuff the traction control is excellent - but I do carry a 10mm spanner to use the available lock if ever required. I follow mates in a Cruiser and a Patrol and seem to have less trouble that them. The ECU upgrade off road is awsome, especially in sand. Haven't tried towing yet. Last time I towed 2 tonne and my fuel consumption doubled.

The CD stacker is jammed - any ideas how to get that out?

Looking forward to having a read in here. I've fixed a lot of stuff myself - I have a trust issue with dealers after they charged me for things I know were not fixed and an oil filter I was charged for when it wasn't replaced (I had marked it). I tested the oil once and had an argument with a dealer who swore he had replaced it. Fresh oil DOES look fresh when I change it myself along with the filters. Sorry, I'm bitching.

I had wax diesel at the snow one year - have a fix for that too.

Cheers, Stephen
