Air Conditioning re-gas

Does anyone know if the Freelander is re-gassed from the low pressure or high pressure port?
From what I understand, my parents Volvo V40 is charged from the high pressure so must be done using a machine, whereas my sisters Vauxhall Astra is charged from the low pressure port so can use a DIY cannister kit.

Basically, I want to know if I can re-gas my air-con myself!

It's only £50 at **** fit and they do a leak test. I thought all aircon systems filled from the same port, in any case the cans come with the correct connector, just check your car is listed. The right amount and type of gas is critical.

Yes I have a freelander and always use the DIY re gas stuff from Halfords it will only fit on the correct port and built in gauge shows pressure. Just follow the instructions on the can. P.S it's the low pressure port to be filled with aircon running at max.

look in yellow pages you will get a proper technicians who do the job properly for very little extra. and then when you have had it done you must use it at least 10 mins per week or the gas depletes

Yep, this is to circulate the lube for the AC seals, and if not used they dry out and it leaks. Most people think AC is just for summer cooling, but it is also for demisting at all times of the year. Mine's on all the time.

It does annoy me that the AC comes on automatically to demist your windows, whilst I appreciate that it demists really well, it also makes the car bloody freezing!

But if it keeps the system from drying out and leaking then I guess its worth being a bit cold til the heating kicks in.

As far as I know, the FL is designed to do that! When you put the blower knob (probably not the correct technical term for it, but oh well

) on windscreen mode the AC comes on?

Take it to a proper A/C place if you're unsure of the A/C history.
They will pressure test the system for leaks, create a vacuum in the system, and refill with refridgerant and lubricant.
A diy refill on a system that may have air in it is a waste of money.

Do kwik-fit do this or do they just try to fill it?

Thats where I got mine done last year, cost about £45 iirc.
You get a print out of leak test result, volume of gas removed and put in, it was on the machine more than half an hour.

The aircon should not operate until there is enough heat from the engine to compensate and most car aircon systems do not work below -5C

It does, or it appears to but it will not be cooling until the engine temperature rises a bit.

No professional is supposed to refill aircon without recovering any remaining gas in the system and doing a leak test, it's illegal.

Hmm.. makes me laugh a bit that there are so many regs about the R134a gas in car AC and it mustn't escape to atmosphere, yet what is the totally legal standard gas for airsoft gas guns? Yep, R134a, and each shot goes straight to atmosphere....

ackshooally, as an airsofter, I can tell you that R134a gas has been phased out by pretty much everywhere and replaced with HFC134a instead which dont damage the ozone, plus nobody actually uses it because its a pathetically weak gas. Its just too weak to work in our cold climate, even at the peak of summer its still a bit weak n weedy. Most people use Green Gas which is a mix of propane and silicone.

I use pure propane or CO2 in mine

But I still have a few cans of standard R134a from back in the day. Waaaay back in the day......
