G'day folks,

Again I have a rivet counting question for you all. Perhaps some one here knows the colour code or paint type for the air cleaner?

It looks like some kind of 1960s speckled silver to me.

Thanks chaps

K&N => No!

The series 2a forum responses (question also asked there) also say that most air cleaners are / were black but one chap like me has got a grey / silver one...

...so if anyone knows where / how to replicate that finish...

There is a paint that gives a crackle effect when heated. You may have seen the effect on some cylinder heads. Much closer to this than hammerite but not sure if they do it in silver. Ive only used the black one. Have a look at VHT wrinkle paint.

I've had three series landys all black painted air cleaner.
TBH I have never seen a silver one.

From what I've learnt so far there were some done in this weird silver effect but the majority seem to have been in black. I guess it was a supplier's whim.

In the thread on the series 2 club forum where I've asked the same question at least four of us have seen / have got silver coloured air cleaners / filer assemblies

I would say that your original had been painted with silver hammerite in the 70's it was real good paint.
I have two oil bath filters in my store one is black one silver.

Never seen any colour other than black ! did they paint the engine/gearbox pink by any chance :D

Nah I don't think they like pink (despite the dubious fashion sense of many an off roader!)

According to the Hammerite website it wasn't really used as a metal protecting paint until the 1980s - but whatever - I think it is highly unlikely it has been repainted. Not many people (like myself) go to the trouble of dismantling the catches before slapping on a bit of Hammerite to stop the rust.

Here are some more pictures of the part =>

I'm totally sure it was always this silver colour and never black.

Thanks Mike - a chap on the series 2 forum has posted up a picture from the 1960s of an air cleaner in mat grey too!

It seems as though series 2 and series 2a's were likely to have grey, silver or black ones depending on the special offer at Halfords I guess...
