Got a K&N on mine and doesn't seem to make any difference! Makes a slightly satisfying noise when breathing, but other than that! Will also slightly reduce your waterproofness, but wouldn't worry about that. I didn't fit one to try and improve performance - it just fitted better after the 200TDi conversion!

If I already had the 200tdi air box fitted I personally wouldn't go out of my way to remove it.
I've got a cone type filter on mine, but only because it's the easy option for now.
As I need to find and air box and filter that wont restrict flow, but also fit in the 90's engine bay.
