Hi just joined as I am considering buying a 2011 110 xs , only to be told that the engine on this model year is unreliable, is this true ? And what should I look for when viewing it .
Thanks karl

Er unreliable I don't think
It'll be the 2.2 which is the latest evolution. I have not read any bad reports about this engine.
If full service history there should be no issues guessing it will have reasonable mileage being only 4 years old.
Get under with a torch and check for the obvious oil leaks and even oil stains if case current owner has given it a quick wipe with a rag before viewing.

I have not heard anything bad about the tdci.

Bear in mind if you are buying the Station Wagon, that the road tax went down in 2011 from £490 to £210 as they were all re classified as commercial vehicles.

Check to see which it is on the one you are looking at!

Only things I have heard is that the gearboxes aren't that strong and the intercooler pipes can wear through, neither are deal breakers IMO as the gearbox can be sorted via an upgrade.

My parents have a 2.4 and it is a million times nicer to drive than my tdi.

As for things to look for, I am not as up to date with the newer ones, but check the chassis, bulkhead and crossmember for rust. It might not be that old, but better safe than sorry.

I've seen tatty ones at that age, but there shouldn't be any structural corrosion unless it's been used to launch a boat every day, or worked down a salt mine.

I believe the tdci is much nicer to drive after a remap.

Yeah, that was kind of what I thought. I guess if it was tatty it would show it has not been looked after.

I don't think convincing my parents to get a remap is on the cards! I would say that the tdci suspension as standard is way too hard, it rattles about everywhere

I'm going to weigh in here.

Pumas do have expensive issues. Gearbox output shaft on the MT82 is so bad that Ashcroft Transmissions sell an upgraded part. LR and Ford have issued Worldwide recalls regarding oil pump failures. After that you still have the same issues as all modern diesels with high pressure fuel pumps and self metering injectors...

Yes the old Tdi's have their issues, but nothing like as much money to fix as the modern vehicles... I would only have one if it was gifted to me...

Edit: in 20 years time, out of the defenders still on the road, how many do you think will be Pumas. I'd say a big fat 0..

My favourite for day to day use is the TD5. I drove a Puma and didn't like it, the gearbox was horrible and the engine took a couple of seconds to respond when you asked it to do something, making smooth progress difficult (l believe a remap helps)

I drive a TD5 110 all day, and l also have a 300tdi. The tdi is more of a "proper" Land Rover, as in how you'd expect a Defender to be.
But for day to day and motorway driving, the TD5 is more refined, quieter, and has more creature comforts.
