Hello, I'm in a bit of a dilema, has anyone fitted a double DIN unit to a Mud console in a defender? I know I've seen it somewhere before but would love to know if anyone has any experience of it and a list of pros and cons.

Is this a good idea? (probably not if no one has done it before!)

Can you get OS mapping for them?

Will they take a battering whist off road?

I like the idea of this and I know some cutting will be involved and difficult to fit but I prefer the idea to a flippy up one which doesn't look as robust to me.

I am looking down this route for overlanding and to keep Mrs Skew entertained. The features I'm looking for are:

As good a nav system as possible (and run radio at same time!)
Reversing camera
Bluetooth phone compatibility
I pod connection to rear
3G bridge to WiFi laptop
Radio
CD (multi? probably not needed)
Digi TV (for those long waits for the ferry and to keep kids entertained- not essential)
DVD/Bluetooth
Speakers in front, second row and loadbay (for when camping)

Am I asking for the moon on a stick or is this practicable????

Thanks in advance.

There are many double din headunits which can do what you ask.

From cheap £150-200 units through to £500+
personally, given the environment, I'd opt for the cheaper units, a lot are powered by Android now (you can plug in a sim card to turn it into a phone), so most apps Android phones can run they can run.

Just eBay Double Din and you'll have a field day. For robustness, avoid CD/DVD because moving parts will fail. But there are many USB/SD Card/AuxIn only headunits for chump change on theBay.

Just get a standard stereo, an iPad or tablet and a screen mount, much better, more useable, better for security, more reliable and easier to install...

Not sure theres actually enough space in there for a double din according to Raptor.

Best idea would be to fit a single din with a fold out screen, does the same thing but takes up less space.

Or a Mechless single din unit (good ones have a small screen) then as mentioned above use a Tablet for the other uses. There are many high quality windscreen/dash mounts that easily hold a tablet.

Hmm looks like it will fit! Looks smart. Might be worth making up a plate to stop flith/water flying in when the vents are open.

Im doing that when i fit my new head unit.

Will look at that! Hadn't thought of it, good idea.

So if I were to have a crack I guess I'd be a kind of pioneer over here. Looks like it has been done in the US and Aus but can't find a reference to it in the UK for advice.

Not sure if I feel up to being a pioneer though, I'll f#@; it up!

HELP!

Yeah I was going to do it too. What led me away from the idea was it getting ruined off road/nicked. And the fact that i wanted lots of switches on me dash :D

On the plate, some 1mm/2mm ali bent into shape and slightly sealed would be good enough.
