Hey Guys i got a Disco 300tdi ES 96 reg last sunday and i knew there was a fault with it and was hoping the owner would of got it repaired before i needed it (as i sold my old car to early) but he ended up getting the wrong part for the job. Its the Front Diff i can drive it in Diff Lock but when out it wont budge at all just get a horrid noise from the front. Now if it is the Diff is there an easy way to know what Spline it is? as im no mechanic but some how manage to rebuild my first car engine with help after the cam snapped taking some valves out  (Haynes manual saved me some cash)

If it is the Diff can it also take out the half shafts along with it?

Any input would be great :D

Thanks

There is no dead certain way to tell other than taking it out but the most common difference is take the wheels off and if the stub shaft has a domed head on it around 30mm deep it is 10 spline. And if it has a pretty flat face with a lump in the middle it is 24 spline.

It could be a diff failure or a driveshaft failure. Until you strip it all down you won't know.

Easiest way if you can get the bolts out is to unbolt the full hub assembley behind the swivel and slide it out with the halfshaft complete.

Do that on both sides then you can remove your diff.

If it turns out to be a broken shaft you will need to use a thin strong rod like m6 steel rod to feed through the axle from the opposite side and knock the shaft out the diff.

Then you can replace everything.

A 96 300TDi will be 24 spline. As has been said you have a break in the drive somewhere, time to take the hubs off and inspect, could be halfshaft, CV joint or a few other things....

Thanks for the advice guys,

That i can see from the workshop manuals i need to remove everything to get the diff out anyway. So when i get the spare time and help i shall inspect it.

Thanks very much again guys :)

Hey guys sorry its taken some time hard to get a place to do the work and help :( anyways Drivers side Hub member is pretty much useless but CV Joint and Half shaft are good and passenger side Half shaft possible snapped we took the hub flange off and the CV joint shaft was able to move about an inch in and then was locked with the diff lock and when pulled back out to put the Cir Clip back on back out of the diff??? that possible the CV or the Half shaft i have no idea but am going to buy a complete Half shaft and CV joint together. but i didnt remove the shaft to see as i dont have a spare to replace with or know if i tried and the end is snapped would it fall in the diff or would i need to somehow knock it out from the other side??
