Hi

Can anyone offer any advice please!! Have just fitted a re-con gearbox, valeo clutch britpart heavy duty clutch fork, and new ,master and slave cylinder. Have bled them both ok, but still can't engage gears.

Help!!!!!!!

Did you check the gearbox before installing it?

Only thing I can think of is checking everything you've done, alignments especially, and working out how to remove it and check it actually works before re-assembling properly!

Last one I did, admittedly a Ford Escort, had the gear lever attached and you could select all the gears easily without the clutch. Then we put it in gear and rotated the input shaft, checking the output did output for all gears. Nothing changed when it went in.

i was suggesting that if they hadn't checked it like this, it might not necessarily be a good gerabox ...

if you stop the engine can you select gears?

If you can, then the clutch is dragging for some reason.

If this is the case, then
Select 4th or 5th, put the handbrake on. Depress clutch. Start engine. HIgh revs, try to pull away. (Handbrake on)

This will hopefully polish the clutch and flywheel a bit more, allowing it to release properly.

You did put the clutch plate in the right way didn' you?

If you can't select any gears with the engine off, check the gear selector linkage is assembled properly, on the defender box there is a wee collar that is a pig to line up, under the selector box.
Failing that, it sounds like the box is at fault im afraid.

When I recently rebuilt my Tdi 200 gearbox and transfer case I replaced the clutch with a heavy duty unit. I fitted the clutch disc as per the info in the Haynes manual which turn out to be the wrong way round. The clutch would not disengage, the heat created due to metal parts of the disc rubbing on the fly wheel damaged the thrust bearing. Pulling the gearbox out a second time is not what I consider fun. Putting my stuff ups in print is not easy either but if it prevents others following the Pain manual it is still not worth it.
