Apologies in advance if this turns out to be an essay…

  • I have a 1995 Discovery 1 with a blue 4 pin connector for Diagnostics.
  • It has an aftermarket ‘Hornet’ alarm fitted.
  • For a couple of years, the hornet key fob has operated the doors and acted as an immobilizer.
  • The vehicle keys do not have buttons on for the central locking or for anything else.
  • The vehicle also has ABS.
A while ago I had a CV joint break and as a short term fix I ran the car with a non-ABS CV joint with the ABS lead disconnected. This obviously caused the ABS light to come on. When I rebuilt the axle with the correct parts it did not fix the ABS light even though everything was reconnected.

I eventually found somewhere with a diagnostic lead that would fit the disco and asked them to connect it up and read the codes / see if they could reset the light. This is where it gets interesting.

The garage could not connect to the vehicle, and suggested that the WEBACO ABS unit was faulty. At the same time as they connected the diagnostic equipment the central locking stopped working (either from the key fob or the key in the door lock)

I replaced the WEBACO unit and after driving for 30 mins the ABS light went off and the ABS was working, albeit a little more sensitive than it was before. The central locking still did not work.

2 days later the ABS light came on again and the ABS stopped working.

Finally, yesterday for the first time ever it seems like a different alarm started to work, that arms and disarms from the driver’s side door key. The siren this time being the car horn and not the Hornet alarm.

Is it possible that the Hornet alarm was integrated into the vehicles alarm / central locking system?

I want to remove the hornet alarm (I am down to one key fob and no way to reprogram if I need to change the battery) but I don’t want to go and cause more problems with the rest of the systems on the car.

Finally, there is another socket that looks like an OBDC but isn’t that is hanging by the WEBACO & what I think is the central locking unit in the passenger foot well. Any idea what it is for?

Can anyone shed some light on how all of this may be connected or recommend someone who really knows their stuff when it comes to the old discovery diagnostics / alarms. Preferably somewhere near Peterborough although I don’t mind travelling.

Thanks
Rob
