I've never tried to look at the underneath of a vehicle before so what do I use to look underneath? Do I use wheel ramps? Jacks? Or are jacks only for wheel maintenance? Is there enough clearance under a Defender to be able to go under on a trolley? I assume I need some kind of inspection lamp too.

You sould have enough clearance just to wheel underneath for most things depends what you doing yeah and some sort of light would be helpfull

Well i can get right under me discovery on me back but its a bit tight going under the axles dont crawl under motors or work on running gear with just a jack holding it up u asking for serious injury or to kill yersel, ramps or axle stands are best or even better find your local friendly garage and ask if they would put it up on a ramp or over a pit for 5 mins so you can have a looky.

Depends what tyres are on it, what axles are on it.

I can get under my 110 ok to work on it when it is on its wheels, to 2nd what sorcy said DON'T go under it when it is just on a jack with the wheels off or dont work on the handbrake with out having it chocked first.

If it's on ramps, should it be in dif lock or anything like that? Its got chunky wheels btw. I just wanted to get underneath to familiarize myself with it as I know nothing of car parts as yet.
If I wanted to clean power wash underneath and anti rust it,I assume I'd have to take it to a garage then.

If you just want to see hat it looks like underneath, park it on flat dry hard grounds, select 1st gear low range, handbrake on and chock a wheel (front & back) A bit overkill, but you only have one life. You should be able to lie on your back and slide around underneath it, but watch your head on the diffs.
If you need to work on it, you may need to raise it.
Usually people get upset on here if you repeat thigs, but in this case I will, as it can't be said often enough.
Never, ever, go under a vehicle supported by a jack

Chap on Anglesey killed a couple of months ago doing just that the jack gave way the car ended on top of him, so very good advice that should be taken.

Andy.

Car ramps can be killers aswel, they dunt roll orf them just tilt and fall sideways. I had a rover fall off on me, just managed to grab the prop and roll to the good side. Unless they are really good ones I would try and lock them together, but even then, get wheels or sumut under just in case. It only falls once.
