97 Landrover Discovery Oil Leaks

I have a 97 model Discovery and have a strange oil leak that no-one can
find. At idle there is no sign of oil leak. After a 5km drive there is
oil everywhere under the car, looks like it is starting at the front of
the engine and blowing to the back as the car drives. My mechanic has
just about given up on it. Anyone have any suggestions on what might be
causing this? It has had a new sump gasket and it isnt leaking here.
Will appreciate any help on this one. Cheers Col

What engine ?

If you could give us details of engine, car, year, model might be helpful. I
am thinking back pressure via a breather. Although, I suppose it could very
easily be one of several oil seals or gaskets.

Andy

P.S. How much oil in reality is coming out? A little oil goes a long way,
how much dipstick drop is present. Otherwise, excellent for anti-rusting.

Is it engine oil, EP90 axle oil or gearbox oil? Any halfwit mechanic should
be able to tell the difference.
If it starts very much at the front and is not axle oil then consider an oil
cooler leak which might only happen when a thermostat in the system allows
flow due to hot oil. A matrix leak would wet the radiators but a hose leak
might not.
Finding it should not be a problem if logic is used to follow through
possible scenarios using the evidence as presented.

I was not watching the adverts on TV and thinking the oil cooler sounded
likely .Pop off the grille and check for contamination if its oily you have
your source - a good radiator repair specialist should be able to sort it
for you.

Get him to check the front crank seal too....oddly it will be clean (as the
oil washes it nicely!)

Blocked engine breather causing over pressure & one of the crank seal will
go first?? That's what happened to mine!!

Col:

If its leaking that far forward you may have sprung a leak in one of the oil
cooler lines. The lines run from the oil filter to the front of the
radiator. Good luck.

Jack

2 most likely causes are the front pulley seal and or the breather system.
its the patented LR, self oiling, chassis anti rust system, at work.
