Hi All,

I have a 90 TD, i have had this vehicle for about 18 months and it has
always smoked from the rocker breather (into the air filter) but more
recently this is getting worse, smoke now visible from the rocker cover
fixing bolts/holes, and i am now getting oil into the air filter also.
i have checked the breathe from sump to rocker and all OK.

she is running as she always has (strangely a little smoother after
fitting a new water pump), no great oil loss, and no power loss (not
that there was a great deal anyway), so any ideas please ??

Thanks in Advance.

sounds a little odd as the intake should be causing enough negative pressure
to prevent the cover smoking, remove the breather pipe from the rocker end
and check it is sucking when the engine runs (palm over end), if you were
burning/ using a little oil I would have said worn rings but possibly the
pipe is closed up for some reason maybe the inner is collapsing?

hmmm, sounds interesting, i have checked the hoses, but the filler
breather hose has had a bodge in the past, been cut and re-connected,
with a bit of tubing inside, and therfore not as wide all the way
through, i will replace it and see if any improvement.

Cheers,

Andy

This sounds suspiciously like the block has gone porus and cracked
a liner or two - that's the worst case that 2.5TD's are well known
for. It could just be worn rings etc, but......

The 2.5TD may be a bit prone to problems, but they will keep running
when mortaly wounded - molten piston crowns, bent con rods etc etc.

Check everything else, but the prognosis is not good (I hope I'm wrong)

^^^^^^^^^^ ?
Poor casting technique? I don't quite understand the terminology.

Interested because Marge throws oil at the air filter like a debutante
with a bottle of champagne. I've assumed rebore/hone + rings would fix
it and now you're worrying me. I've a bit of oil leaking from the rocker
cover, but otherwise a surprisingly clean engine, so it may not be the
same symptoms...

Oh I do hope so!

For whatever reason, the block material loses its strength, and fitting
a new liner (without some sort of filler, there is said to be a
ceramic to fix it) will simply cause the new liner to distort within
a short time.
