I have been down sailsbury plains this weekend and its been great fun but I now need to sort out my cooling system. On the way down my thermostat buggered up, it got hot and I had to do some roadside repairs, this set the theme for the weekend. Next my hose burst, well, it got worn through as I stupidly trapped it when refitting the stat housing and it wore on the pulley.

Anyway over the weekend I had lots of hot moments, I kept washing out the rad as it was full of mud and now I have decided that as I dont know how old it is I am going to replace it. So, im wondering, is there a better option? I know I can go ally rad but was wondering if theres anything else worth looking at? Im going to be doing my water pump as well as I have no idea how good that is either, is there anything else I should be looking to do as well as these 2 bits?

cheers

Interesting idea , Jon ...will be looking at this one for some ideas myself .

I know its not directly what you asked but on non AC D1 300s I have put the electric fans from the AC model in front of the rad , manually switched through a relay for hot weather towing , caravan in slow moving traffic jam on a bank holiday sort of situation . I used to do this to volvo 200/700 series cars as a standard mod as I found it so handy .

Yeah I should have added that to my post, I have got my AC fans still although all the AC is removed, I shall be using these on a double pole switch and a Kenlow stat control unit, I will be able to do permanent on, stat controlled on or switch off all together. I will be running both fans, one on the front, one on the rear, this is so when its blocked up (as it will be again at some point) you van get air flow to both sides.

I would recommend doing the P Gasket as well, as i did my water pump not long ago and now have to strip it off again to do the P Gasket :mad2:

I've been told that the V8 rad is slightly better for the 300's as well, but unsure of how true that is!

Usually the 300 TDI is over cooled. If anything you "down rate" the cooling system by removing the viscous fan.
A standard radiator, working thermostat, working pump, good p gasket and a properly bled system should be fine.
Unless you are towing a caravan up hills in a hot country I really don't think you need to uprate the cooling system

Yeah i found put this weekend it is a pretty good system, Just wanted to make sure im not missing something, a popular mod I dont know about or something. The mud clogging the rad was a bastard this weekend. I might look into building a mesh screen for directly infront of the rad as this could be slipped out and cleaned easily whilst out, alot easier than my trip home today anyway!
