there shouldn't be any sealant, but there might be. In any case thoroughly clean both surfaces before refitting with the new gasket.

I had a persistent leak from the rocker so cleaned it all properly (already done a few times) and replaced the gasket with a new one and an absolute smidgin of blue hylomar and job's a good 'un .. no leaks now.
To me it looks like a poor design .. too much surface area not enough bolts to clamp down evenly. Mine had been clamped down very, very tight so I suspect the cover had developed a warp ... I guess this is the same for a lot of rocker cover leaks.
