300Tdi injector pump timing HELP needed

I misread the Haynes manual to adjust the timing, locked the pump shaft and rotated the timing belt by turning the crank shaft clockwise. So now the pump timing could be anywhere and as a result although it starts JUST but it will not run properly.
I have now read CharlesY timing directions but to be able to follow this I need to get the injector pump shaft in approximately the correct possition on the pump sprocket. How do I do this? I have a 1995 (early) Defender 300Tdi with timing belt just replaced as required.

i have been told there is only one pin hole in the pump so rotate the pump pully until your pin goes in to the pump then set the timing on the other pullies and fit timing belt back on
 
there is a locking point through the bell houseing into the fly wheel if its a manual as well as marks on the pulleys, would also recomend you download a rave cd or get a haynes manual.

i would be cearful when ajusting the timeing again if you go the wrong way you may do your pistons and valves damage
 
The timing belt was replaced about 1000miles ago (not by me) and all was OK but recently it started to smoke and run irratically. So I checked the timing which was out. But I missread the Haynes manual and turned the crank shaft puully quite hard whilst the pump shaft was locked. I have been unable to get the timing pin into the pump slot with the flywheel locked at TDC. There is not enough adjustment in the pump sproket when the 3 bolts have been loosened.
Is it possible to have turned the timing hole flange on the shaft of the injector pump and thus making it impossible to get the timing right? If so how do I readjust the flang. I have found no reference to how the flange is set to the correct possition on the shaft. Or how to undo the not at the end of the shaft etc. Can anyone help?
I live 50 miles from the Land Rover dealer and it would cost a fortune to get it fixed by them.
 
i had a similar problem when replacing a pump as it came with nothing on the shaft. but luckily there was a keyway on the flange you talk about, although not used it left a mark on the shaft so i was able to line the old flange up to the new pump using that! may have been a bit of luck though. dont know if they all have an unused keyway!
The shaft nut should not be undone to do the timing belt. if it hasnt then you have no problems just take the belt off, set everything back to tdc and put it back together. you can get away with a certain amount of adjustment with the belt on but it might not be enough.
