Anyone know if it is possible for oil to be leaking from the brake vaccuum pump situated on the RHS of the block on a 300 tdi engine. It seems to be coming from the casing of the pump not the actual mating surface of the block where the gasket is???
thought oil was leaking from rocker cover but done that and not sure now???

any ideas appreciated ,thanks

Check the oil cooler pipes coming from the radiator to the engine block ... mine were leaking and the oil getting blown about, making it look a sh1tload worse than it actually was.

I second that - I have the same leak at the moment and its from the cooler hoses makes the pump look like its leaking as you say.

Not sure what the fix is yet, might just be a tighten up job (hope so).

I have a leak from my brake vacuum pump not from the mating surface but the other end. Indie Landie dealer who was fitting track rod ends for me said that was where it was coming from and that the bonding that holds it together was coming apart and it wouldn't be repairable. I've bought a replacement but still need the fool proof idiot's guide to replacing it - ie a quick way to set the engine at tdc or to know whether 'tis possible to remove and refit the pump without setting the engine to tdc...confused? I am!  :)

That's a good idea although I already have a replacement. I can't believe it's so complicated to set the engine at TDC  On a petrol engine I'd just take the spark plug out, sit a screw driver or similar into the hole and rotate the engine til screwdriver rose to it's highest point. I'm a diesel noob:baby:

Cheers

Have changed mine ,was easy .The TDC setting just relieves the pressure on the pump spring. The spring in the pump keeps the follower against the Cam so when engine set to TDC spring in pump body almost fully extended therebye minimising the spring tension that you have to undo the bolts against.
Again when fitting the old one you wont have to compress the pump spring when offering the pump upto the block.Though i still had to push in and hold whilst the first 2 bolts put in.Hope this helps
