Can someone point me in the right direction please.
looking from manifold to carb there is
gasket/thin metal plate/gasket/plastic spacer/gasket/carb

is the thin metal plate a restricter plate as I don't remember seeing one years ago on others

The thin plate used to hold a bracket on other cars for cables etc, not sure on the V8.

it's in a defender 110 which is in need of some TLC, I believe the engine has come from another vehicle.
As I've got quite a few jobs to do I was hoping the lack of power would turn out to be either the metal shims or incorrect timing.

I'll try looking down carb, failing that when gearbox is rebuilt I'll strip the carbs-they are bound to be full of crud as the oil is clean and no cam rattle

the restrictors in a stage 1 V8 were a block not a plate they were about 1.25" thick with 4 holes cast in them IIRC and they sit in inlet below carbs HTSH

thanks I'll pull them when I've got the gearbox sorted and look

I'd be interested in the results. Can't help feeling that there was more to the 'detuning' of the RR engine for stage one application, other than plonking a couple of lumps of metal in the manifold. Years ago, whilst owning series 3's (2.25 & 2.6) I used to drole over stage one station wagons, good one's are now rarer than hen's teeth.

bits are on order, interestingly the parts schematic shows the thin metal plate as a restrictor plate.
I'll poke round as far as the bottom of the carbs -but the valley gasket can stay for moment.

were the stage one v8 engines running different needles and jets as well?

No idea Fanatic, hence my interest. Don't think my bones would tolerate a 'leafer' these days but that doesn't stop me from going all gooey when I see a stage one for sale!

I used to have a series landy fitted with the v8 from an early rangerover (the 8.13:1 low compression one) this had the stromberg carbs with the restrictors mounted in the inlet manifold, i ditched the restrictors and carbs, then added S.U carbs instead... a massive difference in power and a slight improvement in MPG. The first SU`s i fitted were from a Morgan +8 and were the HS type. These were fairly ancient and were later replaced with some later HiF type S.Us from an SD1 rover. I found that i had to ditch the mechanical fuel pump in favour of an electric one to really make it shift.
The other main change was to change the timing chain which made it possible to accurately time it up... the slack in the chain was quite alarming
hope this helps a bit
cheers
Rex

have looked the parts microfiche lists restrictors they are toothed like an epicyclic gear which encroaches into inlet manifold-seen them looking down mine-spare 5 minutes bastards will be removed
