Ive a 1990 90 with a 200 tdi in her.

Just checked the air filter thismorning, and there was a tad of oily liquid
in it?

Bad news?

Mark.

Would that depend on the last time you checked and how clean it was
back then? Would knowing mileage help in guessing?

I remember threads about engines running away and self destructing on
the hard shoulder once they are running on the engine oil, any
mechanics out there able to tell me if this happens with other
vehicles, and if for similar reasons.

All the best

Some oil in the air filter is normal, how much is normal is hard to
quantify.

Should you engine run away, just stop, put the handbrake on, stick
it in 5th with your foot on the brakes, take you foot off the clutch
and it will stall. No problem, no damage (unless you've managed to
use up all the oil - but you'd have to do some seriousl not looking
in the mirrors to do that!).

Normal to an extent. However, there is a cyclone device bolted to the side
of the rocker cover which will be of painted metal in your case and a larger
plastic device on newer models. This has in fact got a service requirment
and needs taking off and cleaning very occasionally. In all probability it
has not had a clean in the last 15 years and is now overdue for a flushing.
This will renew the effectiveness of the oil separation from the crankcase
ventilation which is connected to the inlet manifold.
Of course your engine could be excessively worn and a clean cyclone will be
overwhelmed, but it sounds unlikely.
