Have a 1995 2.5dtse with the usual bmw engine. Since i have had it, it has always had the hot start issue. Now dont laugh. but i bought an aftermarket fix of a reputable seller on ebay, device is a 30 second delay relay circuit board, in a housing.

Connected to engine temp sender, 12v supply on starting relay plus an earth. Done this, no joy. Took to my local mechanic who checked it and agrees it is wired right, internal leds on circuit boards are lighting and going out, but it has made no difference. Preheat coil symbols dont light on dash when i do this either.

Some people have said you can adjust belt/chain??? on fuel pump to compensate this problem. Would appreciate words of help from anyone, before i have to buy another new battery!!

Hi 999MPH. I just fitted timed fix on my 2.5 BMW engine P38 1997 bought from ebay for approx. £30.00. followed instructions, Great! heater coil lamp comes on starts on first click when goes out. Previously 10/12 secs.(a long embarrasing time) cranking before starting. I have had a battery each year for the last 4 years. Goldpanner

thanks goldpanner, sounds like i have the exact same unit as you. When you cut into the engine temp sender wire, the instruction say to cut the blue/grey wire on the wiring loom. The only one i could find had a dark grey stripe which looked almost brown..... Does this sound like the right one or have i screwed up?? The led lights up on the circuit board, could this just be the 12volt signal from the relay only.

Hi 999mph. I noticed you said you connected into the BLUE/GREY wire. If you re-read your instructions I think you will find the wire you want is GREY/BLUE ( see Photo) It is a Grey wire with a blue stripe.
I have taken a picture of the wire but do not know how to load it into message. give me your email address & I will send photo. Regards Goldpanner

Goldpanner, many thanks for the update, at work tonite but will look at in the morning. Just one question......w3hat the hell have i actually cut into in the wiring loom?????? Time to consult rave for wisdom.

:DGoldpanner, glad u read instructions carefully, unlike me. Got the grey blue wire connected and my rangie is going a treat. My battery is also thankful for the rest!!
