Hi all,

P38 was not the land rover I'd though it would be....

Recently overheated and, what water was left boiled over.

this was due to perished plastic on top of the rad where it leaked. I've now sealed it and holds the water and stays cool.

When it did boil, I lost power as you'd expect, and immediately pulled over and switched off. I had water in the back i could top off with so I undid the expansion cap and of course it exploded out. What concerned me was the fact the water contained a large amount of what can only be described as copper particles...similar to coppa slip. The water left a very funny feel on my hands to, almost like silcone.

Thinking I'd found a good interim solution I now have no turbo charged air to the engine and it's become very underpowered. The engine will not rev past 3000 rpm when stationary or when on the move. Theres no "overdrive" any more. I could put my foot down and the engine would go nicely.

I've only completed a quick visual inspection and there doesnt seem to be any leaky or split pipes. Oil was changed 500 miles ago (and flushed) and so was the air filter.

Does anyone have ideas to see if the two incidents are related or coinsidence? ( I fear this is the trend of P38 ownership!)

I've read about collapsing pipes but have no idea of what to look for. If any one has a trouble shooting / fault diagnosis list that would be great.

Cheers
Ash

Sounds like the engine is in "limp mode". Get the fault codes read. I also sounds like someone has tried to fix a head gasket or cracked head problem with some kind of sealant, not good news if that is the case.

Thanks datatek,

I thought about the limp home mode, but does it not have a speed restriction? I can still get 75mph top? If this is the case is to go to the dealer?

Do you know if a chinese special OBD II will work or is it to the dealer to?

I guess compression test would determine a cracked head; I'll replace the rad and go from there.

I don't know about Chinese OBD readers, but for the engine it's possible to read the codes without a reader using flash codes, I can give you details if you wish. A compression test will not show up a cracked head unless it's very bad. Limp mode is power & rev limited, I don't know what speed that would give.

Yeah any advice or direction you could give for the flash reader would be great thanks. Would I be right in assuming there's no readout on the warning system/ warning lights telling me the vehicle was in limp home mode?
