Hello,
i have aa ex mod ffr 2.5 na and would like to know if i have the 12j or 19 j.
Where do i look on the engine(it is one that was part of the mod updates) and does any one have a photo of exactly where is should look.

If it is a 19j engine block, does it mean that i have the hardened parts(pistons etc) to add a turbo...or is it just that, the engine block is 19j.

Many thanks,

steve.

stamped on the block flat

either way don't bother sticking td stuff on it.. that's a bag of rubbish.

stick a 200 or 300 in if you need to change the engine

Apparently the number is sometimes just forward of the exhaust manifold but as trax says....

You're probably better off keeping it n/a with possibly a strengthen block than a turbo with possibly a non cross drilled crank etc.

If it is a naturally aspirated engine it will be a 12j, unless it is a de-turboed 19j.

All later 19j have coated pistons, not sure whether they were fitted to later na as well, they were mainly to withstand extra heat on the turbo engines.

Wouldn't bother trying to retro fit a turbo, na is a pretty good engine anyway, and you would need a 19j injection pump, 2.5 na pump doesn't have a boost housing on it.

a strengthen block

As far as I know, strengthened blocks are an urban myth ;) I have seen a lot of 19js, and all the blocks seem to be the same to me. Later engines were fitted with coated pistons, block was the same, until the introduction of 200Tdi, where the block is stiffened by the addition of a ladder frame under the block. :)

12J engines are good if a little slow. While it's running well, I'd stick with it. If you rebuilt a 19J that would a straightforward enough swap. At one point it would have been a no-brainer to do a 200tdi conversion, but these days good ones are much harder to find, and more expensive since the supply of rusty discos has mostly dried up.
