Hello all

My 1998 Freelander 2.0 xedi has all of a sudden developed a starting problem,it ALWAYS starts but im turning it over for ages before it fires up.

Once it does fire if you touch the pedal it dies, you need to just let it warm up itself.

It does this everytime its been left for a while, even on starting after a short stop its turning over for a while before starting, good job my battery is new!

If it was a Pajero, I would definitely say the seals on the fuel injection pump were shot, but I don't know enough about these engines yet. The lack of starting is the air in the system, and when it get's through there's only enough for a tickover, when you give it some beans, there's not enough fuel so it dies. Makes sense?

Have you tried priming the pump using the hand bulb then seeing if it starts better?

Also check that your oil level isn't rising and stinks of diesel. Like I said, I don't know how these work well enough yet, but on Pajeros, the leaking fuel from the pump goes into the sump, and you can imagine what that will do over time..
 
also one to check is the timing on the diesel pump, this was the cause on mine. mine would be a git to start first thing int he morning but after that would be fine.

only problem i still have is the lack of power at the start but once i have pulled of the drive i have full power back
 
Mine had a starting problem that turned out to be the banjo connection on the fuel pump being slightly loose and allowing the fuel to drain back to the tank when the engine was off.
 
What comes from the exhaust pipe when it starts.

There are loads of threads on similar problems, so have a good look at the forum when you've looked at the colour and the amount of smoke that emanates. Tuning-diesels for cheaper diesel tuning. is also useful.

Well I got the Mrs to turn it over last night whilst I pumped the primer and it DID start up better

Today whilst pumping it diesel squirted out so im off to replace it....any do's and donts when i replace??

I think the post above yours could be the answer- a leaky connection of the fuel pipe allowing air in and fuel back down the system.

Do report back when fixed with the answer and cure.

Got to be honest and admit.....the pump has to go on the correct way round, ie one end sucks and the other blows.....they say ya learn by your mistakes :eek::eek:
