Hello,

The ignition barrel on my 1997 Disco 1 has a few issues.

1 - The key is difficult to put in / remove, requires a fair bit of wiggling
2 - It is quite difficult to turn the key
2 - When it is turned and cranks, once the engine starts and the key is let go, it doesn't fall back from the crank position, so the start motor continues. It needs to be turned back manually which is a bit fiddly..

I have bough a replacement steering lock / ignition switch STC1435.

My question is, do I need to program the new keys? Or is it just a case of removing the shear bolts and swapping the part?

Any advise would be helpful.

Thanks
Adam.

Hi mate, welcome

Have you tried squirting wd40 in where the key goes with the straw and working it. Can you send the parts back if that works

No, not WD40, that washes out the locks lubrication ... you need graphite powder, also branded as LockLube ...

Try turning the key over as sometimes the weight of other gubbins on the keyring causes wear on one side of the brass fingers in the mechanism ...

Never heard of that stuff before, I've only ever used wd40, which I must admit has always worked even if it's not the best stuff to use. Where do ya find it, I like having things like that in stock
