Hello all,
I know that the 2.8L engine in the '89s is a GM product, but is the rest of
the drivetrain also a GM product? That is, could I take the entire
transmission + transfer case assembly from, say, a 4x4 S-10 and throw it
under the Trooper? If this is the case, I wonder how many yards and parts
dealers are aware of this. I am in need of a replacement tranny after a
lovely throwout bearing mishap and this would help to broaden options as far
as looking through salvage yards, etc.
On that note, what is the best way to go as far as transmission repair?
According to the mechanic ( I haven't yet gone in to look myself ), the
transmission case was severely damaged by the throwout bearing and
subsequent clutch damage. However, it sounds as if the actual transmission
is still fine ( I was able to drive it to the mechanic with no problems,
other than the terrible noise and clutch grinding. Didnt have any problems
in any of the gears ). His suggestion was to just pull the whole thing and
toss in a new transmission, and I assume the 4x4 transfer case goes with
that. Is there a way to avoid this, and if so, what is the most
cost-effective:
- Find a used transmission somewhere and hope it's relatively cheap
- Find a rebuilt/reman transmission, same hopes as above
- Find just a transmission case, and have the mechanic put the old tranny
into it (Given that he isn't a specialist, I am leery of this option)
- ???
I am going to try and get to the mechanic tomorrow to check it out myself,
to see exactly what he is talking about. They only opened it up Friday
afternoon; we were thinking it was only a clutch replacement job...sigh.
Thanks,
