1956 series 1 second gear issue

hello everyone my name is Günther and I’m new to the forum well back in 1956 my grandpa bought a brand new series 1 Land Rover and brought it to my country, in 1979 my grandpa parked it hoping to fix a second gear issue, with no success he left it on the family barn for many years till 2012 when I started to be interested in the car world, since then I went almost every day to play on the old abandoned Land Rover, he always watched me play on it but never said a word about it, in 2018 a few days before he passed away he hand me the key and said if you can fix it it’s yours, so now I’m fixing it but the main problem is a second gear issue, the gear simply won’t go in and I don’t know what to do could anyone please help me ?

Does second gear select when the engine is not running? What about the other gears?
