I thinking about a 110 TD but this beastie needs bottom end work the
suggestion was I could do it with the engine in? So sump off ends and
bearings off but to pull out the crankshaft do I need to split off the
gearbox cos I can't see how else I could separate the flywheel.

I don't either! The only way of removing the flywheel is to remove the
clutch which means the engine and gearbox must be separated. If the bottom
end only needs bearings, without the the shaft being reground, it is
possible to replace the big end bearings with the motor in place, and may
just be possible to replace the mains, although I doubt it. Otherwise it is
either engine or gearbox out - I'd be inclined to remove the engine as it
will then be easier to work on!

Hi Derek
It will need a crank grind if the bearings are knocking, are you sure its
bottom end? After my experiences of land rover diesel engines budget for a
full rebuild! If it is just the crank I have a td engine (which is in need
of a rebore) that has a reground crank and new undersize bearings that has
covered 10 miles ish since crank grind this is a result of trying to get
away with not reboring .
Crank grind and bearings cost best part of £100 IIRC you can have them for
£50

Cheers
Icky

Thanks for the offer I may go nuts and take you up on it Icky its not
bearings tho on this motor ( which I'm getting the idea I really would be
pots for rags if I bought it) the woodruff key went kegly and chiselled a
lump out of the crank nose , the bottom timing gear and the bottom pulley so
the crank would be the answer even more odd was a colleague has just had to
a rebuild on his for the same reason tho his dropped a rod later - both
engines were factory rebuilds draw your own conclusion! . I called in for a
look on my way past ( I go everywhere sooner or later ) although the chassis
seems fair ( I don't like womping about with my hammer without the owner
present) the bulkhead is lacy round the mirror mount scuttle area ( how
unusual <cough>) given time I would have been round tapping like a demented
woodpecker. Still have the boat taking up space so I really shouldn't commit
to more work .........and thanks to JD for confirming what I thought was
the case, I know strange things are possible ( I used to change mini
clutches in car) but that was piqueing my interest and I agree engine out is
best by far I've had more oil up my sleeve than Paul Daniels
