Well, the time has come. On Saturday I'll be travelling 269 miles to pick up my first Landrover (Ex-MOD 110 hard-top, 1986, 2.5 NAD) and HOPEFULLY driving it 269 miles back...

My plans are to turn the back into a comfortable sleeping space with TV, sink, water tank etc. and thought I'd run my general plans past you guys to see if anyone can spot any glaringly obvious mistakes.

First off, I'm thinking of removing the roof and side panels, treating any rust I find and sealing them up good n proper when putting them back together. Don't fancy getting [too many] leaks behind the insulation.

I'm gonna buy this water tank from Ebay:

Defender 90/110 Expedition Long Range Water Tank | eBay

and stick it against the bulkhead, then block off the rear from the front with ply, so the water tank isn't visible from in the back (rather fill tank from hose behind N/S seat than drag hose thru living area).

Next up is insulation, gonna use 3mm foil backed insulation in two layers on wheelboxes, side panels, roof and rear door etc and a 10mm sheet of closed cell foam matting for on the floor (which will have a sheet of ply on top).

The side panels will then be covered with pine T&G and the roof with thin ply, leaving holes for LED lights.

I'm going to make a full length cabinet on the N/S that will be full height apart from a lower section nearest the rear door where there will be a sink with a demand water pump that drains thru the wheelbox. Closest to the bulkhead will be a TV facing towards the O/S, hidden behind the cabinet door (which will fold down and become a small table.

Along the O/S will be a full length seat with storage under, including a smalll fridge. It will have a foam cushion base and back. This will leave an aisle down the middle. I intend to leave some kind of notches in the cabinet and the seat, into which I'll put pieces of wood to span the aisle and some ply cut to size to bridge the gap. I'll work it out so the foam seat back fits in and, in theory, I should have an almost full width sleeping area with foam cushioned 'mattress'. I reckon I could get 2 people on it, depending on how well I know them!

How's it sound so far?

Yeah, I realise the roof is Ally, but I'm lead to believe there could be some on the 'body end cappings'. I may be talking nonsense, I've been reading about these things for wayyyy too long. Everything is just merged into one now.

I have a few questions about electrics that I can't seem to find clear answers to...

I'm going to be putting a T-max split charge on it, with 2 leisure batteries under the drivers seat (if they'll fit?). What I want to know is if the split charge will work OK even though it's connected to 2 leisure batteries (which will be connected in parallel) and also the starter battery?

Also, do I just earth the leisure batteries to the body and run the live to my consumers then earth those to the body, or do I have to keep the system separate, ie run the live to the consumers and earth them all the way back to the battery?

I realise these things may seem obvious to some people, but I'm pretty much a complete novice.

Thanks in advance.

You made me go off and waste time looking at batteries.. again

You should be able to fit two Numax CXV-X or Odyssey 1500/1700 look to fit. Get a tape out and start measuring :)

That'll be the first job when (if) i get home in it saturday. I'm more concerned about the actual wiring job. Sure I'll figure it out as I go...

Cheers

If you're going to the trouble of removing the hardtop, take the cappings off and get them galvanised. On early models this has already been done. I saved a lot of money and fitted a VSR (voltage sensitive relay) and a pair of Numax batteries, I've got a cheap to buy volt meter from a boating shop, I can flick the switch between the batteries to check the charge.
